Does Your Fridge Really Need a Regas?
Maybe, but not for the reason most people think. A home fridge has a sealed gas system and the gas doesn't get used up. If a fridge is low on gas, it is leaking. Topping it up without fixing the leak gives you a few weeks of cold at best, and it's also against the rules for a refrigerant to be released into the air.
So our fridge gas recharge in Parramatta works in this order: confirm gas really is the problem, find the leak, repair it, then recharge. Most regas jobs cost $250 to $600, and the leak repair is quoted separately before we begin. If the gas isn't the problem, we'll say so. A lot of 'it needs gas' fridges actually have a fan, sensor or defrost fault, and those cost less to fix.
Fridge warm and not sure why? See all the causesSigns Your Fridge May Be Low on Gas
None of these proves a gas problem on its own. A technician confirms it with gauges and a leak test. But if you see two or three together, a leak is likely.
Fridge slowly gets warmer over weeks
A leak lets gas out gradually. The fridge copes at first, then can’t keep up.
Compressor runs constantly, fridge still warm
It’s working hard to move gas that isn’t there. The motor feels warm but the cold never arrives.
Frost only on part of the evaporator
Low gas cools only the first section of the coil. The rest stays warm and the freezer back panel frosts unevenly.
Freezer not freezing, fridge section slightly cool
Often the first thing people notice. Ice cream goes soft while the fridge is merely cool.
Hissing, bubbling or oily residue
A hiss or gurgle from the back, or a greasy spot on a pipe joint, is the oil that leaves with the gas.
Compressor hot, no cold at all
A fridge that has lost nearly all of its gas, or a blocked system. Switch it off and call us.
How a Proper Fridge Regas Works
Topping up a gas bottle and walking away isn't a repair. This is what we do on every job:
Rule out the easy causes
We check the condenser, fans, thermostat, door seals and defrost system first. If one of those is the culprit, no gas is needed.
Read the rating plate
The plate inside the fridge or on the back shows the refrigerant type and the exact charge in grams. We never guess.
Pressure and temperature tests
We connect gauges and measure temperatures along the system to confirm low charge and spot a blockage.
Find the leak
An electronic leak detector, and a nitrogen pressure test where needed, shows where the gas is getting out.
Repair, evacuate and recharge
We repair the leak, replace the filter-drier, pull a deep vacuum to remove moisture and air, then weigh in the exact charge.
Test and explain
We run the fridge, confirm it’s cooling and leak-free, and explain what we did. You pay the price we quoted.
A full regas with a leak repair usually takes 2 to 3 hours on site. After that, the fridge needs 4 to 24 hours to settle at 3 to 5°C and the freezer at −18°C, so don't judge it in the first hour.
Fridge Gas Leak Repair Parramatta
The leak decides the job. Where it is and how big it is changes both the price and whether repairing is worth it.
Leaks we can usually fix
- Pipe joints and brazed connections, often at the compressor or drier
- Pinhole corrosion in an accessible copper line
- A split in the process tube where the system was originally charged
- A worn or damaged service port
Leaks that often aren't worth fixing
- Aluminium evaporators in older frost-free fridge-freezers. They corrode from the inside, and a part is expensive or hard to get
- Leaks inside the foam of the cabinet wall, where the pipe can’t be reached
- A leaking sealed unit in a very old or low-value fridge
We tell you which of these you have before any work. If the leak is in the wrong place, we'll say so plainly and talk through replacement. Paying $500 to regas a fridge that is going to leak again next month isn't good advice, and we won't give it.

The wrong gas, or too much of the right one, can damage the compressor. The type and charge are printed on the rating plate. This is a rough guide.
| Refrigerant | Typically found in | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| R600a (isobutane) | Most domestic fridges made from the mid-2000s on | Flammable. A very small charge, often just 20 to 60 g, so a few grams over or under matters. Needs proper handling |
| R134a | Fridges from about the mid-1990s to the 2000s, and some newer ones | Not flammable. Still widely used in older fridges and some bar fridges |
| R290 (propane) | Some newer domestic and commercial units | Flammable. Same care as R600a |
| R12 and other old gases | Fridges from before the mid-1990s | Phased out. Usually not worth regassing. We’ll talk replacement |
| R404A, R452A and similar | Commercial fridges, display cases, coolrooms | Larger charges. See our commercial refrigeration repair services |

See all repair pricesWhen Regas Is Worth It, and When It Isn't
Usually worth it
The fridge is under about 10 years old, the leak is at an accessible joint, and the repair is well under half the cost of a comparable new fridge.
Usually not worth it
The evaporator is leaking, the fridge is 15 years old or more, or it has already been regassed once.
We'll give you the numbers and let you decide.
