Common Problems

Common Freezer Problems We Repair

If your freezer is doing one of these, a technician can usually find the cause quickly.

Freezer not freezing

Food is soft, ice cream is runny or the freezer only feels cool. A sign the system is not making enough cold.

Heavy frost or ice build-up

Thick frost on the back wall or around the door. Usually a defrost fault or a seal that is not closing.

Freezer cold, fridge warm

Cold air is not reaching the fridge section. Think iced evaporator, fan or damper.

Freezer not running at all

Silent and dark. Could be power, the controller, a start relay or the compressor.

Loud buzzing or clicking

A failing fan motor, a tired relay or ice touching the fan blade.

Water leaking

Puddles under the freezer or water inside are most often a frozen or blocked defrost drain.

If the freezer is cold but your fridge is warm, see our fridge not cooling repair page.

Freezer Types

Chest, Upright and Fridge-Freezer Repair

Each type fails in its own way. Knowing yours helps us bring the right parts.

Chest freezers

Simple designs, so faults are usually lid seals, thermostats, condenser dirt or the compressor. Ice around the lid is a warning sign.

Upright freezers

Frost-free models rely on fans, defrost heaters and sensors. Manual defrost models fail more on seals and thermostats.

Fridge-freezers

Top mount, bottom mount, French door and side-by-side. The freezer and fridge often share one evaporator, so a freezer fault can warm the fridge too.

Common Faults

Why Your Freezer Is Not Freezing

Soft food, heavy frost or a freezer that runs and runs: here is what each usually points to.

What you seeLikely causeWhat we do
Not freezing, compressor running Dirty or blocked condenser, failed fan, low gas Clean the coil, replace the fan, find and fix any leak
Not freezing, compressor silent Start relay, overload, controller or compressor fault Test the electrics first, then the compressor
Heavy frost on the back wall Defrost heater, timer or sensor fault, or a blocked drain Repair the defrost system and clear the drain
Ice around the door or lid Worn seal or door not closing fully Replace the seal and check the door alignment
Water pooling under the freezer Blocked drain or failed drain heater Clear and heat the drain, check the tray
Runs all day, barely cold Dirty condenser, worn seal, low gas or a failing fan Clean, reseal and test the sealed system
Loud buzzing or rattling Fan blade catching ice or a failing fan motor Defrost, fix the cause and replace the motor if needed
Display blank or error showing Control board or sensor fault Test and replace the board or sensor
Frost-Free or Manual Defrost

Frost-Free vs Manual Defrost Freezers

How your freezer defrosts changes what usually goes wrong.

Frost-freeManual defrost
How it defrosts Automatic, with a heater, timer and sensor You switch it off and defrost by hand
Frost build-up Should stay light Builds up slowly and needs regular defrosting
Usual faults Defrost heater, timer, sensor, fan Seals, thermostat, compressor
Typical type Most upright freezers and fridge-freezers Many chest freezers and older models

Heavy frost on a frost-free freezer is a fault, not normal. On a manual defrost freezer, a thin layer is expected but thick ice means the seal or thermostat needs a look.

When It Stops

Freezer Stopped? What to Do With Your Food

Frozen food holds its cold for a while if you do the right things.

Do this

  • Keep the door or lid shut. A full, closed freezer stays cold far longer than one opened repeatedly.
  • Check the power point, plug and switch.
  • If a neighbour or friend has freezer space, move the most valuable food first.
  • Check the food: ice crystals and hard food are a good sign.
  • Note the brand, model and any error code before you call.

Avoid this

  • Do not chip ice off the back wall with a knife or screwdriver. A punctured coil is a costly repair.
  • Do not refreeze food that has thawed and sat above 5°C for more than 4 hours.
  • Do not use a hairdryer near the electrics.
  • If you smell burning or hear sparking, switch it off at the wall and call us.

Honest Advice

Is It Worth Repairing a Freezer?

Usually, yes, with a few exceptions.

Usually worth repairing

The freezer is under about 10 years old and the repair costs less than half the price of a similar new freezer. A new fan, heater, sensor or seal is almost always worth it.

Usually not worth it

A leaking sealed system on a 15-year-old freezer, or a repair that costs more than half the price of a new one. We will tell you before you spend anything.

Freezer Repair Parramatta FAQs

Most freezer repairs cost $150 to $450 including parts, plus a call-out fee of about $60 to $200. A door seal is $120 to $300, a fan motor $180 to $400, a defrost heater or sensor $150 to $350, a control board $250 to $600 and a compressor $450 to $1,100. You get a fixed quote before we start.
The common causes are a dirty condenser, a failed fan, ice blocking the evaporator because the defrost system has failed, a worn door or lid seal, a faulty thermostat or control board, or low refrigerant from a leak. A technician tests each one in turn.
Heavy frost usually means the door or lid is not sealing, the defrost heater, timer or sensor has failed in a frost-free model, or the drain is blocked. Chipping the ice off only helps for a short time. We find why it formed and fix that part.
Keep the door shut so the cold stays in. If the food is still hard with ice crystals, it is usually fine once the freezer is back. Food that has thawed and sat above 5°C for more than 4 hours should be thrown out and not refrozen.
In many fridge-freezers the cold air is made in the freezer and shared with the fridge by a fan and a damper. If the freezer is cold and the fridge is warm, look for an iced-up evaporator, a failed fan or a stuck damper. Our fridge not cooling repair page covers this in more detail.
Yes. We repair chest freezers, upright freezers and the freezer section of fridge-freezers, including frost-free and manual defrost models. Have the brand and model ready when you book.
Often yes. If the repair costs less than half the price of a similar new freezer and the freezer is under about 10 years old, repairing usually makes sense. Sealed-system faults on old freezers can tip the balance, and we will tell you plainly.
Yes. We repair commercial freezers for restaurants, cafes, shops and other businesses. Commercial jobs are quoted separately, and our commercial freezer repair page has the details.
Our work is carried out by licensed refrigeration mechanics (Lic #R38910) who are ARC licensed to handle refrigerant. We are independent and not tied to any brand, so we tell you plainly when a repair is not worth it.
